Intel Inside: Delicious
by Unknown
Hi friends, I humbly welcome you to my blog
where I will be posting weekly about Web 2.0. In this blog post, I will be
talking about how Data is the next Intel Inside and how Delicious is harnessing
the collective intelligence.
Lets Dish it Out…
Delicious is an online social bookmarking
web service for storing, sharing and discovering web bookmarks with a diverse
demographic and global customer base. In September 2003, Joshua Schachter
launched the website and was then later acquired by Yahoo who claimed the
bookmarking web service had a growing 5.3 million users with 180 million unique
bookmarked URLs. (Arrington, 2007) Just quite recently (last year), Science
Inc. got hold of the website and has been the owner of Delicious ever since May
2014, intending to keep the site largely as is. (Fiegerman, 2014)
The Tastiest Bookmarks on the Web
Delicious Home Page
Delicious uses a non-hierarchical
classification system where users are free to tag their bookmarks that creates
a kind of folksonomy. Because of the combined perspective of every user’s
bookmarks with a given related tag, the collective nature makes it possible to
see other bookmarks of the same tag added by other users. This generates a
shared online service, creating a high interest and richer user experience that
engages users to transition from a desktop to an online platform. (O’Reilly,
2005) The online social bookmarking service has what’s trending displayed on
the home page that can also help to make Delicious a hip conveyor of memes and
Internet trends. This way, Delicious is able to capture niche markets exposing
small sites that make up the bulk of the Internet through user tags. (O’Reilly,
2005)

Awesome ways to connect with other users globally
To
facilitate new users, it is free to use and also provides the user an option to
import bookmarks from their current web browsers to Delicious. It also works
through other social networks where the user is able to log in through
Facebook. This engages users to be real-time testers of the website where
Delicious is continuously updated with data. This establishes that the data is
as important as the function of the website where Delicious grows in bookmarked
URL’s as well as it’s users depending on the data value. (O’Reilly, 2005)
Delicious also offers users to build a network of friends, creating a
data-packed feed.
Delicious Trending page
Delicious is one of the most popular social
bookmarking services and a very good example of a Web 2.0 platform. It builds
on a collective user value where the website will not work without it’s users
or bookmarks providing a strong data strategy, activates network effects
through exposing small websites and works through social networks by connecting
to Facebook and other contributions. It is also a good way to stay on trend
with what is happening globally and uses a network effect to involve and
connect users around the world.
